Ingredients:
Prawns- 1 lb
Crushed/thinly sliced shallots- 1 cup
Ginger- 2 inch thick (cut length wise)
Garlic- 4-5 (cut length wise)
Green chilly- 2 ( cut length wise)
Kudampuli/ Gambooge- 2peice
( or use Kokum or Tamarind)
Thick coconut milk- 1/3 cup
Chilly powder- 1 tsp
Turmeric powder-1/3 tsp
Coriander powder-1 tsp
pepper powder- 1/3 tsp
Garam masala- 1/2 tsp
Fennel powder-1/2 tsp
Curry leaves
Coconut oil- 2 tsp
Method:
1. Put 1/2tsp oil in a pan and saute the prawns with 1/4 tsp chilly powder and salt till all the water has evaporated.
2. In a separate pan heat oil and add sliced garlic,ginger and green chilly and fry for a 30 seconds followed by shallot /onion and fry till light brown.
3. Add turmeric powder followed by kukum/tamarind, salt,coriander powder, chilly powder, fennel powder, pepper powder and garam masala.
4. Now add the cooked prawns to the above onion mixture.
5. Then add coconut milk and simmer till the masala is reduced. Keep this aside.
6. Take banana leaf and gently place on the gas stove flame turning each side quickly till it changes color.
7. Place this leaf on a plate and layer the prawns masala. Fold in from all side wrap the leaf and tie it. (Like in the above image ) .
8. Heat a manchatti ( earthen ware) with lid or a tawa. Grease it with a little oil and place the wrap in and cover and cook for 2-3 minutes turning sides in between.
9. Serve with rice or pathiri.
