The word mushroom is derived from the Gallo-Roman mussiro which evolved to mussereroun in Middle English. Although quite common in this day, mushrooms in the past have been more in the realm of magic and mystique. Egyptian Pharaohs reserved mushrooms for themselves, forbidding the commoners to eat them and the Romans passed laws declaring mushrooms as “Food of the Gods”.Many believed that mushrooms had properties that could produce super-human strength, help in finding lost objects and lead the soul to the realm of the gods.In the eighteenth century, France began cultivating mushrooms resembling the basic mushroom that we all buy at the market.
